This works fine for demonstrating the working principle. It can also be improved to make it more practical for actual use: 1) Easier rewinding: Add a second string to the spool with a ring or washer at the end. When the weight goes down, the spinning spool will wind the second string, that way it's possible to pull the ring to rewind the string with the weight. 2) Longer runtime: Use a bigger motor without gears (a thinner spool increase the rotation speed too), a bigger bottle or other weight heavy enough to spin the bigger motor. The smaller spool and bigger motor will greatly increase the runtime. 3) Voltage regulation: measure the output voltage when the bottle drops, and put just the right number of LEDs in series to get a voltage below the maximum for each white LED, so it the output is 6V and the LEDs are rated for max 2.2V, put 3 LEDs in series so that each one gets 2V. 4) Optional optimizations: Use sewing thread, thin fishing line or speaker wire instead of a string to keep the spool from changing diameter (and speed) much, and add LEDs with reversed polarity to also get light while rewinding the spool with the ring from #2, and finally add a capacitor for each set of LEDs to store any excess current so that the LEDs stay on between pulls.
